IL2009: Sneaking the Social Web Into Your Library & Going Beyond 23 Things

Speakers: Bobbi Newman, Lori Reed, Erin Downey-Howerton

This session covered some of the social web tools and how to use them in your library with staff for the purposes of getting them interested in these tools, exposed to these tools, and thinking about how they might work.  One good suggestion that was made was to unplug your staff from all of the regular updates and ask them to provide an email update to the rest of the staff on what they are currently reading.  You can also have staff use tools like del.icio.us to share favorite websites on topics of interest to them, personally or professionally.  You can do the same thing with GoodReads.  You can also have staff share photos with each other using Flickr, maybe sharing photos of staff events or personal photos (photo of kids, a Pet Gallery).  Lori Reed also talked about what to do at your library if you have already done a Learning 2.0 project.  Some of the ideas included thinking about what your goal is for learning with your staff.  What do you want them to learn?  Build a marketing plan.  Research your audience.  Identify objectives—are you looking for an outcome or output (there’s a difference)?  Craft your message.  Find the right platform and tools to move forward.  Develop a plan.  Evaluate to see how well it worked.
