Twitter in Libraries

Thinking of using Twitter but too scared to? Check out How Your Library May Not Be Using Twitter But Should. Kelly D. Allen makes a very good argument about the potential uses for Twitter in libraries and lays out the different types and levels of Tweets that you can be sending.
For those of you who have followed my inner battle with Twitter (shall I, shan’t I?), I do still stand by my opinion that I don’t like it personally and I think its trendiness belies its shallowness, I do still see a use for it in organizations. It’s one more way to communicate with customers, and there’s nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Open your doors, open your arms, and open your eyes.

Cool. Thanks for the link. I’d considered writing something along these lines, but haven’t gotten around to it. His is much better than mine would’ve been. I think the different tweet styles were well done.

Thanks for posting. I have been Twitter resistant as well. Like you, I can see a use for it but am still trying to work it out for myself. I love you your blog!

I personally use Twitter daily, mostly to keep up on breaking news. It is also useful for us as a library to keep news and updates flowing to additional segments of our patron population. Some people use it, others don’t. It’s about preference and choice these days, and while it may not be feasible for a library to cater to ALL the social media channels out there, it IS important to hit at least the major ones with some presence especially if the library wants younger people to be lifelong patrons. With Facebook, MySpace, MyYearbook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others being used by nearly anyone with a computer, it is incumbent upon us to reach as many of those patrons and potential patrons as possible. They need to know, whether they express it or not, where their tax dollars are going and we have a duty to provide the service levels they expect. I’m getting ready to overhaul the look of our web site and will be incorporating social media heavily in our design. Keep up the great work, Sarah!

I think this is a fantastic idea to bring communities together and help people get in- the-know about what’s going on n their local libraries. 2 of my best friends just recently got onto Twitter and I follow ALA. As a college student for information and library science, I get really excited knowing I get links to a bunch of neat info on libraries all around the country not only on the eb, but on my cell phone too. I hope that at least the larger state libraries like NYC, Chicago, Hartford, and even college libraries like at Yale and Harvard will open their eyes to this new communication system.
