Microsoft Office Gets Webby

October 28, 2008

Microsoft is reporting that the next version of Office, nicknamed Office 14, will be web-based (create and store your documents on the web through a web browser).  Does this sound a bit like Google Docs to anyone?  Funny that.  Chris Capossela, a Senior Vice President of Microsoft's Office division stated "Nobody, none of our competitors, will do as good of a job on the phone, the browser or the PC."  Hmm, Google's already doing a better job and I have a hard time believing that this Office will be so dramatically better than past Offices (Office 2007 certainly did not live up to its hype) so as to beat what Google has now much less what it will have when the next Office is released.  Nevertheless, it is interested to see them moving in that direction and it reaffirms the move overall in computing toward cloud computing

It would be better than Google Docs if it kept all the features of Word 2007 desktop edition. I still need Word for some types of projects though I’m always hoping Google Docs gets better.

  2. Brian Herzog Says:

This would be miserable for a public library – people would have to create an account just to type up their resume or homework assignment. And then remember their password if they ever wanted to see it again. I think we’d stick with Office 2003 or switch to Open Office – accounts in libraries are usually problematic things.

I completely agree Brian. And Open Office (which I use at home) is awesome. It doesn’t have _all_ the bells and whistles that Microsoft Office has, but it is strong enough for 98% of user needs. Rock on Open Office!
