Medical Image Search

October 29, 2008

Back when I worked the reference desk (and I do miss those days sometimes) I used to get a lot of questions about medical stuff – and sometimes people wanted pictures of things.  Usually those "things" were horrible diseases so we'd be looking for photos of some terrible skin condition or rotting internal organs.  And now you have a good place to look for those rotting organ photos – hurrah!  The OmniMedicalSearch searches medical images.  The site also offers general, news, and other searches, but the image one stood out to me.  Here are the results for a search for knee joint, as an example.  They're pulling from many different medical websites and it works a lot better than a Google Image Search where you're slogging through irrelevant junk to get those few jewels.  If you want to know more, they even provide a list of the databases they're searching so you can go right to the source.  This works far better than any other site I've tried for medical images and I am happy to file it away for my own future use if nothing else!
