MusicMesh

April 3, 2008

OK, I’m on a "bookmark this site" tear today.  MusicMesh (beta) is an interesting music discovery site.  After searching for a particular musician, you get a graphical representation of closely related artists.  CDs themselves link to lots of information: reviews, tracklists, YouTube content, and more.  The connection with YouTube is a huge seller…many people are looking for music videos and don’t know where to start. Here you get music info + the videos.

My own searches were disappointing…a search for Morrissey brought back Morrissey CDs as 3 of the 6 related groups.  For Moby, it was 2 out of 6.  The recommended groups weren’t all that closely related in my opinion, though in some cases they were artists I did like anyway.   I think it’s an interesting concept, especially representing the information visually, but for now I’ll stick with Pandora for finding music recommendations.  Its accuracy is uncanny.

I really like Last.fm the best of all to be honest. I let it look at what I was listening to (called scrobbling) for about a month before I looked into what it’d recommend for me. It was really accurate in things that I would like both based on my neighborhood (other users who listen to similar stuff) and their recommended tracks. I’ve found a few new good bands using Pandora, but I’ve found loads more using Last.fm.

It seems to have a rather limited selection of artists/albums. Hopefully it will grow over time.
