Family tree maker

September 5, 2007

Genealogy seems to be taking off like gangbusters lately, and with it comes a desire for family tree creation tools.  If you’re looking for something quick and easy to recommend to users, check out Geni: a free web-based family tree creator.  I created the below tree (shrunk to protect the identity of the innocent) in under 2 minutes.  You can add names, birth dates, living or deceased status, gender, locations, etc.   You also have a lot of control over the display characteristics.  This was really, really easy to use and something I would happily recommend to anyone.  You can make it as simple or as complicated as you want, a feature that any great technology tool has :)

I had a look at this site as I’m really interested in genealogy. Unfortunately it doesn’t allow you to import or export Gedcom data so you have to type all your information in from scratch. Fine for newbies but not great for anyone who wants to download their existing family history info for online reference and sharing. They are testing export and will then be investigating import but until then it will mostly be a useful tool for people to try drawing a family tree for the first time.

    Sarah,

Isn’t it amazing what’s happening in genealogy right now? Thought you might also be interested in http://www.familyinhistory.com It does allow GEDCOM import and will create a website where you and your family can collaborate to add pictures, stories, timeline events and more about each of your ancestors.

One of my siblings started a Geni group for our family earlier this year and I took an immediate dislike to it. Why? Because clicking on the link in his email invite automatically established an account for me, instead of letting me look around before deciding to join.

Used FTM for 10+ years. In Dec. if failed to “run” (failed to load the database of stuff). Bought FTM 2009. Still failed.

Need a read “tech” to give aid on “Hex editing”, using something akin to “BreakPoint Software’s” product (pricey), for a one time repair (once the offending field of data can be neutralized).

    Any takers?
