New “Spaces”

December 11, 2006

Rob Darrow tells us about local students finding alternative "spaces" to MySpace, including HmongSpace, MinoritySpace, CrackSpace, and others of a more disturbing name and nature.

The existence of these MySpace clone sites should come as a surprise to no one.  The fact that some people are using these social networking sites instead of or in addition to MySpace should also come as no surprise.  Web space evolves–where people go to hang out evolves.  Find out where your users are hanging out, besides MySpace.  And then talk about whether or not you should, as library staff, be hanging out there too.  With some of these sites, I honestly don’t know.  But just as with real-space outreach, you go where your users are and you try to tell them about all the stuff we can do for them.  Same in virtual space.
