Scott Pfitzinger has blogged about some innovative ways that libraries can use LibraryThing: using it as a collection development tool, a tool to help build "recommended" lists, find reviews, see what’s popular with the reading public, on and on.  It’s a nice list of ways to use this free "cataloging for fun" tool!

It can also be recommended to patrons who want us to save their records of past check-outs after we tell them we can’t save that information for reasons of privacy. The main reason I starting using it is so I remember what I read the past year for when the holidays roll around and I’m thinking about gift ideas.

Andrea, our III catalog offers something called “My Reading History,” which users have to actively turn on, but which will keep a list of everything they’ve checked out. Only they can access the list (not staff). A lot of users really like it.
