The Gender Gap

August 25, 2006

If you haven’t read this yet, take a look at Roy Tennant‘s article in Library Journal, "The Gender Gap," discussing the lack of women in the tech side of librarianship.  I’d like to think that I’m one of the "women who have made substantial contributions to digital librarianship" he mentions, but hey–maybe not.  In all reality, I am a small player in a big game where the big players are men.  Period.

Women are lacking in all professions tech–it’s not just librarianship.  But in our profession the discrepencies are even more marked, as we are by nature a profession dominated by women.  Oh yes, except when it comes to management roles or technology.  That seems to be where all the men in our profession go.  We could list a hundred reasons for it, and still not get at the crux of the problem.  But it’s an important discussion to have nonetheless.
