MySpaceIM
Thanks to Aaron Schmidt for his heads up that MySpace has introduced its long-awaited IM client: MySpaceIM (beta). It does require a download; there had been some speculation that it was going to be web-based like Meebo.
MySpaceIM only lets you communicate with your MySpace friends (e.g. other MySpace users). It will be interesting to see if all the people who have stuck with AIM and Yahoo!, but are also MySpace users, will make the leap to using MySpace IM. My guess is that like many of us, they’ll simply get one more account in one more service, and monitor everything at once. Such is the beauty of Trillian, Gaim, and Meebo, which allow you to monitor multiple IM accounts in different services from one interface. I wonder how soon they’ll add MySpaceIM as an option?

#1 thing I don’t like about it is you cannot turn off logging. I know that the MySpace TOS includes a line that basically says, “Everything you put up on your MySpace is ours forever. Even if you delete your account.” I really don’t need someone else owning my conversations.
#2 In the TOS for MySpaceIM, there’s a section stating that you will not allow any third party intervention. So that’s a stated no to Trillian, Gaim, and Meebo. Though I am sure that the other big IM co’s have the same line. I guess it’s just wait and see.
#3 It’s Windows only. And based on the screen shots, they want you to use IE as well.
#4 Of course none of this will prevent the slews of MySpacers from using it.

I downloaded the myspaceim and when I tried running it it said that that installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package. Ummmm What can I do about this I really want to use the service?

You could try contacting MySpace’s Help Desk: http://collect.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=misc.contact

If you’re getting this error: “Error 1723. and this is what it says… There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personelle or package vendor.”…Try to download Windows Installer
Go to http://www.microsoft.com and search for something like this “Windows Installer Windows XP” if you have Windows XP or “Windows Installer Windows 95″ if you have Windows 95, then choose the right installer for your system. Then download and install.
After installing it, Restart your computer, then install MySpace IM again.

What I’m wondering is, if like AIM, it is bundled with all kinds of malware?

That clause doesn’t mean what you think it does. It basically means you won’t give your username and password to a site like so many idiots do with the “myspace trackers”. That’s what the “intervention” is.
