Flooded by Address Labels
February 14, 2006
Am I the only one plagued with an excess of address labels? These are the free things sent to you in the mail to try to get you to donate to one cause or another. I donate to a few charities, but get these labels from dozens of them. Here’s my current collection, and it seems to grow every week. In a day and age where I send postal mail maybe once a week, and with me being someone who can’t throw anything out that is potentially useful, this is maddening.

I have scores of them. They can come in handy–I still pay bills by snail mail, and I send out a lot of essay submissions with SASEs–but since I’m about to move I’ll have to ditch the ones I have. Perhaps we should come up with some kind of collaborative art project.

Hmmm, that’s an interesting idea. I cut up some address stickers I got with Christmas images (I don’t celebrate Christmas), and used the teensy stickers to decorate holiday cards and gifts for my relatives and friends who do celebrate. I’m still left with the address-bit though. What else could we do with these things? Some kind of “address label ball,” like the rubber band and aluminum foil balls of our youth?

I cut off the pictures, especially if the labels are from some animal organization like ASPCA, and decorate my envelopes with them. I’m sure the post office loves me. As for the rest, about once a year I clean out my folder of all but a few. Into the recycle bin…

I think this must be pretty much an American thing – I’ve never received anything like this at all. I’d happily get them, because I can see ways I could use them, though they wouldn’t tempt me to donate to their charity I have to confess.

I use them as tape!

I started getting them recently, and I know EXACTLY what organization sold my name, and it makes me want to stop donating. Junk mail really annoys me. But, I write a fair amount of letters so I can still put them to use.
