If you haven’t looked at the Internet Archive’s Open Library yet (scanned page images from books), please do so.  Your eyes will be happy.  It uses Ajax-based page flipping, the books are fully searchable, and the quality of the images is super-high.  Roy Tennant posted on Web4Lib about one of the developers’ blog posts about the site.  Very, very pretty.
