David (Diane) Schroer was hired by the Congressional Research Service (LC), but when an upcoming gender change operation was revealed to management, the job offer was withdrawn.  Schroer and the ACLU have naturally filed a sex discrimination lawsuit.  Sad but not surprising that even in our national library, supposedly the gateway to freedom of information and liberty, such discrimination occurs.

“Library of Congress Civil Rights Violation”

  1. Jack Stephens Says:

    Sarah,
The WaPo article you link to states that Schroer had undergone “months of psychotherapy,” and was proceeding with treatment for so-called “gender identity disorder.” It seems that Schroer only informed his prospective supervisor that he would be “transitioning” after he had been hired.

Thus it appears that at the time of his hire, Schroer had concealed his history of mental illness from his prospective employer. In those circumstances, it seems to me that any employer would be well within their rights to rescind the job offer. It is Schroer’s honesty that is at issue, not his gender.

  2. Sarah Houghton (Librarian in Black) Says:

The article says nothing of mental illness, Jack. Gender identity disorder is not considered to be, in the medical community, a mental illness, but rather a medical condition. At any rate, I highly doubt that if I concealed bipolar disorder or a panic disorder from potential employers that I would have my job offer rescinded.
