Dark Crystal sequel
May 24, 2005
The Henson Company has announced that a Dark Crystal sequel is in the works. Production should start in the fall, and the new movie (working title The Power of the Dark Crystal) will show Jen and Kira as monarchs and guardians of the crystal.
As a true child of the 80s, I am thrilled at this news. Those Skeksis were scary, and the source of a few nightmares in little LiB’s young mind. I hope they employ Brian and Wendy Froud for creature and puppet design as they did in the first movie.

woohoo, good stuff. that movie freaked me out so much but i loved it at the same time — and yes, they should definitely use the frouds again, their puppetry is amazing.

Ooh, thanks for sharing the news! I love that film. My favourite scene is where Fizzgig throws his little tantrum when Jen and Kira are going somewhere without him. I agree the Skeksis were scary – the one that went “HmmmMMmmm” always freaked me out.

I’d trust the Hensons no matter who designed the characters, no one does puppetry better than they and fewer do as well, but to achieve continuity of style they’d have to stay with the Frouds. The combination was brilliant and magic — and think what they can do now, with more experience and better special effects!Frankly, I’m thrilled. _Dark Crystal_ is one of the best underappreciated fantasy films I know. (I’d rate it right up there with _Labyrinth_.)

In case you all didn’t know, the Dark Crystal is available on DVD. I was lucky to pick it up in, “we want to get rid of these” bin, for just $5.95 US.

I don’t know how I feel about a sequel. Sequels are notorious for letting fans down, and now that Jim Henson has passed away, it almost seems like his family will be leeching off his legacy. Frankly, I’d like to see a prequel (although those can also turn out pretty bad). The book “The World of the Dark Crystal” describes the incredible history of the Crystal, the division of the urSkeks into the Skeksis and the urRu, and Aughra, an entire mythology that isn’t told in the film. Furthermore, while they’re using puppets, they will also be using computer animation. I don’t know. It sounds risky, very risky. I remember Aughra saying that the Conjunction could be either the end of the world or the beginning. This movie will either disgust or elate fans of the original. We’ll just have to wait and see…
