Google Maps & Rides
April 6, 2005
Google Maps now includes satellite views (from their Keyhole acquisition, presumably). Hint: you have to click on "Satellite" in the top right corner of the page, otherwise you just get the regular maps. They apparently took images of my area during the autumn, as most of the time, those hills are a beautiful green.
From Google Labs, we also have Google Ride Finder, which builds on the Google Maps technology to find the live positions of taxis in various cities. The offerings are pretty paltry right now and I can’t think of a real use for this other than "Hey that taxi is close, I’ll call them," and even if you do, that taxi might already be taking somebody else somewhere. Anyway, it’s kind of neat, if only just for a look-see.
