target new-in’

November 21, 2004

I’ve been "target=_new"-ing you all since the inception of my site (for non-coders, that means all hyperlinks on my site open in a new window).  I’ve decided to stop doing that, and let all links open in the same window.  Less code & easier for you (I think).  If you feel really strongly about this one way or another, let me know in the Comments section.

“target new-in’”

One “base target=_new” at the top is not much (does blogging software allow that much access to the code? or do you have to fill it in for each and every URL??), and if your reader follows links on the referenced page, there are fewer <alt><left-arrow>s to deal with. It’s entirely your decision, of course, people can always just go back to your blog and page down to where they left off, and I certainly won’t stop reading your blog one way or t’other, but I find a separate window easier to deal with. Odd thing is, though, that (far as my memory goes, which is admittedly rather wonky) your links never did open in a new page for me. I associate your blog with a lot of alt-lefting. Oh well.

Hmm. That’s odd. I always tried to remember to open links in a new window. Anyway, I do have to enter the code for each URL, so that’s kind of a pain. I used to prefer links opening in a new window too, but have started to get frustrated with the zillion tabs I have going in Mozilla, so wanted to try something new…we’ll see how it works.

  3. Tanuki Says:

It’s not important enough that we, your faithful readers, have any right to expect you to type in the target= every time again. Your blog is great just as it is … Odd, though, that the blogware doesn’t allow for this option. Should I ever start a blog, I think I’d be better off simply coding it by hand. A bit more work, but my control would be finer. Besides, it wouldn’t matter, since no one would be reading it, anyway [grin].

I target=_blank all external links on my blog, but then again, I don’t blog as frequently as you do.
