Library myths

November 21, 2004

The Kinky Librarian has a nice list of library myths, and the answers to debunk them.  The four myths she debunks:

  1. Everyone who works in a library is a librarian.
  2. Public libraries are staffed by volunteers.
  3. The books on your shelves are all donated by publishers and such.
  4. Libraries just have books. Who needs them with everything on the internet?

I think that ALA should create a poster of all of these myths (or at least a similar list) with appropriate debunking under each one.  I also think (I’m thinking a lot today) that libraries should try to think of ways to get this information out to their patron base.  Patrons don’t know what we do, who we are, or all the wonderful things we can do for them.  Or maybe ALA should just hire twenty PR experts and have at it nationwide for 5 years of library and librarian awareness.  Hmm?

Hey! Thanks for the shout out. I get the feeling on an almost daily basis that all these myths need to be shouted about until people hear them. I’m glad you liked my post.
