Ads on the site–not at LiB (yet)
October 6, 2004
Two of the blogs I read regularly, J-Walk and Steel White Table, have added Google AdSense ads to their site. No disrespect to those with ads on their sites, but you won’t be seeing any ads on LiB anytime soon. I feel like I do what I do on this site, yeah it costs me $200 a year or so to host, but I’m just philosophically opposed to ads on anything I do. Maybe it’s that public librarian in me that wants everything to be free, open, and uncluttered.

My ads are there for one reason only: To support my favorite internet webcast. I don’t keep a penny of the revenue — which, by the way, is a lot more moolah than I thought it would be.

I respect your view; I debated it for months, but when I saw how unobtrusive J-Walk’s were, that decided it.
My reasons aren’t as admirable as J-Walk’s though:
- I’m curious how much revenue it provides.
- I host SWT on my own 5 year old PC, and given the traffic I get now, I can’t afford to pay for hosting services at this time; but I’m afraid my old clunker is going to die any day now. I want a host.
- The ads are unobtrusive. I wouldn’t use them if they got in the way.
When I win the lotto, I’ll be getting rid of them.

I truly meant no offense. I read both of your sites every day, and link to them often. It’s a wonderful thing that J-Walk is donating all profits to Whole Wheat Radio, an indy radio station I also enjoy. And you’re right, the ads are unobtrusive. There’s just something inside of me that says “no” to ads on my site. The reason for this post was that several people had e-mailed me asking if I would be adding ads to my site (some in response to seeing them on your sites), and I just wanted to put it out there that I would not be. Truly, no offense or criticism intended.
