What, Me Register?

August 5, 2004

Wired News has an interesting article entitled “What, Me Register” that discusses fake registrations for online news sources that require registrations (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Post). The author admits to creating phony identities to register for the news site, and points to two generic log-in sites: BugMeNot (yay!) and Mailinator. From the article…

“OK, so the primary use of our registration information is for targeting ads,” admitted Donald W. Marshall, a spokesman for The Washington Post.

Hmmmm, that strangely echoes my own comments when one of my readers protested against my promotion of BugMeNot.

Another cool thing is the Mozilla plug in that pops up a bugmenot password when you right-click on the site.
