San Diego State University has produced an online dictionary of California Indians & Their Reservations. I’m fairly sure that “Native Americans” is the correct term, but whatever. It’s a good resource. You can look tribes up alphabetically and there’s also a map of reservations in California. In my time on the reference desk, I’ve had a surprising number of kids doing reports on local Native American tribes (some very obscure & hard to find information about). I think this would be a good place to start. For many of the mid-sized tribes, not only do you get a geographical location for the tribe, but a brief history and links to other websites with additional resources.
